Kids Try Transit

Target Audience: KIDS! Teaching younger generations about all the possibilities of transit in our region.

Strategy Objective:RFTA has coordinated with the Basalt Elementary every year to have a special day during the summer camp where we bring a bus to the school and teach children about the importance of riding public transit and a crash course on being an RFTA rider.

Situation Challenge: The Basalt Elementary school has always had immense support towards public transportation and every summer we collaborate with them during their summer camps to bring a bus and do a field trip day to show the kids about public transit in our area.

Results Impact: KIDS love it! Luckily we have some great drivers that are willing to volunteer for this program and some great kids that are pretty transit savvy. We show up with faux bus tickets and ask them where they would like to go and drive them around the area just to show them how to safely ride RFTA and how important public transit is in our valley ( because you don't need a car to get around) Many of them had already ridden the bus with their parents before so they were already very knowledgeable about pulling the cord to request a stop. Additionally, they get home and have so much enthusiasm to ride public transit!

Why Submit: This is a program that allows us to teach the younger generation about Public transit, by visiting the school and demonstrating how easy, safe and fun it is to ride. The future generation depends on public transit, we would like to think that we are preparing them by showing them the positive effect on the community and the endless possibilities of having such a thriving system. Additionally, many kids ride with their parents and one day will be old enough to do it on their own, this event clears all their questions and curiosities about one day being a "RFTA" rider.
